Cathedral Head: He's a brick houseThe New York Times [1] has posted a sweet interactive feature on Guillermo del Toro's production diaries for "Hellboy II: The Golden Army."
You can check out several pages of character designs, hand drawn by del Toro, and listen to audio clips of him explaining his inspiration for them.
Incidentally, I saw "Hellboy II" Saturday night and loved it. But, some of the stuff just plain didn't make sense. For instance, the character del Toro dubbed "Cathedral Head." He's just what he sounds like — a guy who's head is shaped like a cathedral, complete with stained-glass windows.
In one of the audio clips, del Toro explains, "The original idea was somebody that, instead of thinking about his home city, he kind of carried it around."
Cathedral Head's skull was originally supposed to feature tiny people walking around on the church's ramparts, del Toro added, "but when we got the budget, the people suddenly left the city."
If you liked "Hellboy II" and have a fast Internet connection, I heartily recommend
checking the full interactive story out. [2]
This feature is similar to the kind of material included on the three-disc DVD set of the first "Hellboy" flick, and I sure hope the powers-that-be give "Hellboy II" a similar deluxe treatment.
