These sneakers bear the bittersweet reek of unfulfilled potential.Longtime readers of this blog might recall my encounter last April [1] with the McFLY 2015 project.
The project was launched by two Canadian brothers — Charles and Michael "Mickey" Maloof — as an effort to convince Nike to market the wicked shoes Marty McFly wears in "Back to the Future Part 2."
Why is this a good idea? Check out the YouTube clip below and it should be self-evident. Yup. The shoes tie themselves. If I could buy a pair, I totally would. I'd never again have to worry about tripping all over myself and having people point and laugh at me while I cry.
So, last week Nike answered the Maloofs challenge ... sort of. They've unveiled a limited edition Hyperdunk 2015, of which only 1,000 pairs will be made. They're not quite the McFly shoes, but appear to be a very conscious homage. The Hyperdunk 2015s sport a similar color scheme, along with an orange 2015 (the year in which the BttF2 future scenes are set) on the right tongue and orange arrows on the left tongue. The arrows harken back to the BttF logo. In case the reference weren't obvious enough, the inside of the tongue and the soles are emblazoned with Doc Brown's expletive-of-choice: "Great Scott!" Sadly, the shoelaces are of the regular 20th century variety.
Mark Parker: man of mysteryThe shoes started hitting stores last Wednesday, and are already commanding prices ranging from $400 to $2,000 on eBay. That's a lot of cash for a pair of shoes that I have to tie myself!
Regardless, Mickey Maloof thinks the shoes look "excellent!" and tried to score a pair last week. He went straight to the top, e-mailing Nike's president and CEO, Mark Parker. It doesn't sound like Maloof was able to get a pair, but he informed Parker that the McFly 2015 project's online petition [2] has racked up 41,000 signatures so far.
What was Parker's cryptic reply? "The voices have been heard. Stay Tuned!"
Hmm ... This story ain't over yet, folks.
