Here is my column stuff from Thursday's paper - sorry for zero posts this week. I'm heading to Denver for the Twins series tomorrow and am not returning to Monday, so it's a short work week.
The following people have been selected to be inducted into the Hutchinson High School Wall of Fame for 2008:
Michael John Arndt, fine arts
Lindsay Whalen, outstanding graduate
Grady Rostberg, coach/advisor
Jack McClelland, coach/advisor
Barb Tschida, coach/advisor
Ron McGraw, fan
Stan Sytsma, athlete
Emanuel Albrecht, athlete
The candidates were selected from nominations by their peers. The selection committee was made up of the activities director, the student council president, a school board member, two community members, the high school principal, two varsity athletic coaches and a fine arts representative.
On Sept. 19, the school will host the induction ceremony just before the kickoff of the Homecoming Football Game vs. New Prague. Kick-off will be at 7:15 p.m.
Plaques will be presented to each recipient in front of the grandstand at approximately 6:40 p.m.
* The Ridgewater Warriors will play Westmoreland County Community College of Youngwood, Pa. at 10 a.m. Thursday in Rochester in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Division III softball tournament.
Ridgewater is ranked No. 3 in the most recent poll.
The Lady Warriors advanced to the national tournament by coming through the losers’ bracket in the Region 13 Tournament in Willmar last weekend.
After dropping a game to Madison Tech on day one, Ridgewater (27-6) came back to beat them 8-1 and 7-3 to capture the title Sunday.
Corvuso’s Ashley Schmeling was 5-6 with a solo home run and two RBIs in the doubleheader. She also had a game-winning home run Friday.
* For the second year in a row, the Ridgewater baseball team came through the loser’s bracket to snare the Region 13 baseball championship.
The Warriors concluded a nine-inning marathon by beating Dakota County Technical College of Rosemount, 16-10.
It was the Warriors’ third straight win of the rain-delay tournament after suffering a 5-1 setback to these same Blue Knights on Friday.
This is the fourth straight year and the sixth time this century a Warriors’ team has advanced to the NJCAA Division III World Series.
* The Willmar Mustangs football team will have around 40 guys on the roster when it opens the season May 24 at Hodapp Field in Willmar against the Northern Terror.
Among the players are Hutchinson natives Gene Doherty, Josh Goebel, Sam Plath and Chuck Hartman.
The Mustangs are in the Minor League Football Alliance East Division, which consist of 53 teams across the U.S.
Home games scheduled in Willmar are June 21 and 28, while the team will also play in Grove City July 19 and in Olivia July 26.

* Hutchinson native Kevin Koglin, a freshman at Concordia University in St. Paul, placed fourth in the 100-meter dash at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Championships in Wayne, Neb., last weekend.
His time of 11.24 was less than four-tenths of a second off teammate Kawaskii Bacon’s title time in the event.
Koglin was also part of a 4 x 100 relay that placed third with a time of 42.89.
Earlier this year, Koglin was part of a 4 x 200 relay that broke a school record with a time of 1:33.14.
The Tiger record holder was given an award from the coaching staff at the end of the year banquet for his dedication to the team.
* After only getting three plate appearances in five games at the North Central Conference Tournament in Omaha last weekend, St. Cloud State University junior Luke Klitzke returned home and wanted to play Sunday.
In his first at-bat this season with the Hutchinson Huskies, Klitzke hit a two-run home run. After a walk in the third inning, Klitzke drove a pitch more than 400 feet in the fifth inning, plating three runs.
In the game against Maple Plain, Klitzke went 2-for-3 with a walk and five RBIs.
Welcome back, Luke!
* Crow River Golf Club will be hosting the second annual Crow Open, a 64-team bean bag tournament, at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7.
Last year, Ryan and Randy Jurgenson teamed to win the inaugural tournament, outlasting more than 50 teams (including myself).

* The Gophers football team has announced its captains for 2008: senior Steve Davis, junior Eric Decker, senior Willie VanDeSteeg, and sophomore Adam Weber.
