This three-story brick school stood in North Park from 1913 to 1975. It was named after H.L. Merrill, Hutchinson’s longtime superintendent.
Constructed: Sept. 30, 1912 to Sept. 8, 1913
Location: In North Park facing Second Avenue S.W.
Architecture: Compared to the Romanesque Tower School and Beaux Arts Pendergast school next door, this building lacked columns, porches and dominant architectural flourishes. It’s more restrained and modern appearance was likely a conscious move away from the high style of the late 1800s. More research will be done to identify its architectural style. It could be neo-classical or federal or another style. The Leader reported the architects last name as Kinney, the builder was Paul Steenberg of St. Paul — and formerly of Hutchinson.
Destroyed by fire: March 21, 1975
Artifacts: No known artifacts survived.
Missing: Reader remembrances and other interior or exterior photos.
