This is the earliest known photo of O.D. Hutchinson’s drug store, which also sold groceries, paint, varnishes, cigars and confections. The back room of this building, then known as Ridout & Hutchinson drug store, was Hutchinson’s library from 1882 to 1887. O.D. Hutchinson was its librarian.
Constructed: 1870s
J.E. Lewis sold his drug store and it became Ridout & Kouwe Drugs some time in the 1870s. Ike Kouwe sold his interest to O.D. Hutchinson (Oliver Dennett Hutchinson) Oct. 5, 1882, and the store was known as Ridout & Hutchinson for several years until Mr. Ridout sold his interest to O.D. Hutchinson Aug. 28, 1885.
Torn down or burned down: Unknown
E.W. Rebstock, Jr. bought the business from O.D. Hutchinson June 20, 1890, and renamed it Model Drug Store. Mr. Rebstock moved the business “next to the old stand,” Nov. 27, 1892. The fate of the old building shown in the photo is not known.
