Summer school boosts students while helping others

Yesterday was the last day of summer school for Hutchinson Middle School students, and they went out with a bang.

For the past several weeks, students going into sixth, seventh and eighth grade have been working on their math, reading and social science skills to better prepare themselves for the upcoming school year.
In Carolyn Vevea’s reading class, they’ve already tackled the book “Tuck Everlasting,” and worked on their vocabularies.

“A lot of us have been using games that the kids don’t realize are good for them,” Vevea said. “They see it as something fun and they get so excited about it they don’t realize how incredibly creative they’re being.”

For soon-to-be eighth-grader Paige Wendorff, LeAnn Mullan’s family and consumer science class was the part of the day she looks forward to most.

“I love it,” Wendorff said. “It’s my favorite.”

So what has her and her classmates so excited?

“We’re tying quilts right now,” Mullan said. “We are finishing a service project.”

About 10 quilts were delivered Thursday to the McLeod Alliance for Victims of Domestic violence during a field trip to the Hope Center. Students have been working on the quilts for the duration of summer school.
