State Legislature increases school funding

The Minnesota Legislature added $49 million, or 1 percent, to fund school districts across the state. The increase amounts to be about $51 per pupil.

“I was really impressed with the $51,” said District 423 Superintendent Daron VanderHeiden. “We really didn’t expect that in a reduction year. That’ll mean a little more than $150,000 for the school district.”

The district is still trying to figure out how the Legislature's decision to cap local property tax levy increase to 3.9 percent will affect its bonding request slated for later this year.
