Talks between Hutchinson School District 423 and its employee unions began in late summer, but haven’t reached a conclusion.
The School Board met in closed session at the end of its regular meeting Monday night (Nov. 9) to discuss negotiation strategy. Speaking in a later interview, Board Member Brian Pollmann said, “We haven’t come to any agreement yet.”
Pollmann serves on the district’s negotiating team along with board members Jim Waldron and Mike McGraw. “We’re currently at the point where we’re still trying to work out the overall percentage increase to salary and benefits,” he said.
The increase will apply to the current two-year contracts, effective this school year and next.
Cari Ann Squier, Hutchinson High School business teacher and president of the teacher’s union Education Hutchinson said, “The only statement I would have is we are continuing to negotiate for a fair settlement for our members.”

Any update, Mr. Sosa?...
Back to page topAny update, Mr. Sosa? Almost a month has passed since your last story... any movement on the contract negotiations? Are the two sides still a ways apart? Are the unions looking for administrator dollars or more realistic amounts? Is the board stepping up to the plate like they did with the A-team? Thanks for keeping up up-to-date!

Back to page topFrankboothfanclub, one of the items on my stories-in-progress list is an update on the negotiations.
I don't think it's unusual for such talks to go on for months. According to a story in the Jan. 15, 2008, Leader, negotiations last time went on for 10 months, wrapping up just before a state-imposed deadline.
According to state statute, "Notwithstanding any law to the contrary, a public employer and the exclusive representative of the teachers must both sign a collective bargaining agreement on or before January 15 of an even-numbered calendar year."

Here's a quick heads-up for...
Back to page topHere's a quick heads-up for people following the District 423 labor negotiations. I'm working on a longer story for next Tuesday's paper (Dec. 22), but this is, briefly, where things are at:
• Education Hutchinson, the teachers' union, and the district last met in mid-November. They are hoping to meet again in the coming weeks before a Jan. 15 state deadline.
• Hutchinson Education Support Professionals (members include secretaries, kitchen staff, educational assistants, etc.) are scheduled to go into mediation with the district Jan. 13. School Board Member Tim Kerkvliet said there is no state deadline for a contract settlement with this union, or SEIU Local 284.
• SEIU Local 284, representing district custodians, has been working on contract language. Kerkvliet said they haven't talked financial figures yet. Negotiations are ongoing.
I'll have more details and views from union leaders and the School Board in Tuesday's paper.

Thanks for the update,...
Back to page topThanks for the update, Jorge. I'm looking forward to your story.
Jorge, I was at the middle...
Back to page topJorge, I was at the middle school on Tuesday and heard a phy. ed teacher say the union and district have reached a tentative agreement. I didn't see anything in Tuesday's print edition and wondered if that was right. I think he said something about being one of the negotiators and that's how he knew. Just checking to see if you can confirm and if there will be a story on Thursday. Thanks Jorge.
Jollyjoker, I just spoke to...
Back to page topJollyjoker, I just spoke to CariAnn Squier, Education Hutchinson president, and she confirmed the teachers union and school district have reached a tentative agreement. It will be presented to union members Thursday (tomorrow) and be voted on Monday. It's a tentative agreement subject to approval by the union members and, presumably, final approval by the School Board.
Squier didn't have the terms/numbers at hand when I called her. I will work on obtaining those for the follow-up story.
Thanks for the tip, Jollyjoker!

so glad to hear this. My son...
Back to page topso glad to hear this. My son has some awesome teachers who help him with his special needs and I hate to see this lead to a strike. I have always supported the teachers. I am just glad they reached some sort of tentative decision.
