Paige Wiehr, 10, of Hutchinson, shot her first deer, an eight-point buck, on Sunday, Nov. 8. That morning, Wiehr and her father, Brent, started hunting early. After two hours of grunting for deer, Wiehr whispered to her father that she had spotted a buck. She fired and made contact, taking down an eight-pointer.
As October slipped into November, Hutchinson area farmers joined others across Minnesota in being concerned that much of the 2009 crop would be left in the field after a month of rain and cold temperatures. This week, almost all soybeans are safely in the bins and corn is popping out of the fields as quickly as the combines can pick and strip the ears and transfer the kernels to waiting grain trailers and trucks. Les Hill, fine wine director of Phillips Wine and Spirits, is the presenter at the Liquor Hutch’s Grape Vine tonight (Thursday, Nov. 19), at the Best Western Victorian Inn. Registration is from 6:30 to 7 p.m., followed by tasting from 7:15 to 9 p.m. Admission is $15 at the door.
