Hutchinson firefighters had essentially extinguished a fire at 156 North High Drive Northeast about 11:20 a.m. Thursday and were about to begin clearing the home of smoke. A passerby said he was “waved down” by a woman with two children, apparently residents of the home. The passerby, Jeff Schuster, said he called 911. “The smoke was rolling out of the roof, so I thought it was something upstairs, but then I came around back and could see smoke coming out of a basement window. Neighbors told me they heard (an explosion) they thought was lightning,” Schuster said.
