Entertainment & ActivitiesBook review: New book chronicles the penny postcards of HutchinsonAugust 8, 2008 - 12:36pm — Kay JohnsonJust in time for the fair, the McLeod County Museum has released a new book titled, “Hutchinson, Minnesota: History in the Mail,” by Julie M. Jensen. Between the covers of this postcard-size book, Jensen has featured more than 100 postcards from the collection of the McLeod County Museum. The postcards, once sold for a penny apiece, chronicle Hutchinson businesses, celebrations, churches, Crow River, landmarks lost, Library Square, people, schools and street scenes. Six Minutes Over Hutchinson: Thresh the night away!August 7, 2008 - 4:25pm — Jorge SosaThreshing: It's more than just a good way to lose an arm! In this week's "Six Minutes Over Hutchinson," Kay gives her ode to the Heatwole Threshing Show, Jorge sings the Twine Ball's praises and both agree — elderly punks are cool. This week's episode offers bad puns and the latest dirt on movies, outdoor festivals and laugh-out-loud local theater. As always, thanks for listening! (Jorge Sosa is a staff writer for the Hutchinson Leader. He can be reached at sosa@hutchinsonleader.com) 'Once Upon a Mattress' opens ThursdayAugust 6, 2008 - 9:25am — Kay JohnsonWhen it comes to laugh-out-loud funny, no one can do it better than Patti Cogley. She brings her talents to the role of Queen Aggravain in the Hutchinson Theatre Company musical comedy, "Once Upon a Mattress." Saturday’s Silver Lake kiddie parade was just a part of the weekend’s Pola-Czesky Days fun. Jacob Schermann, Landon and Jackson Stifter, and Ella and Katie Nowak were the “5 Little Monkeys Jumpin’ on the Bed.” Thankfully, all they threw at the crowd was banana-flavored candy.
Junior rockers: Last Men StandingAugust 5, 2008 - 10:43am — Kay JohnsonRock tonight (Tuesday, Aug. 5) with Last Men Standing, featuring soon-to-be Hutchinson Middle School seventh-graders — and best friends — Sam Ruppert on electric guitar, Hayden Black on drums, and Tim Hanna on bass guitar and vocals — at the National Night Out gathering beginning at 6 p.m. at VFW Park on Sherwood Street in Hutchinson. You may have seen him earlier this summer in the remake of “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” In the Mummy films, he plays the role of devil-may-care adventurer Rick O’Connell.
