Another update: District

Another update: District Health Services Coordinator Monica Neubauer yesterday (Oct. 14) said absentee counts at the district's four school buildings were mostly declining or holding steady this week.

After the Hutchinson Middle School reported 123 absences last Friday, its Tuesday total was 109 and Wednesday total was 97.

Park Elementary reported 70 absentees Tuesday and 64 Wednesday, after 75 students were out with flu-related illness Monday. West Elementary increased from 59 absentees Monday to 70 Tuesday, before falling to 64 Wednesday.

The high school showed a decline from 95 on Monday to 73 on Tuesday and 68 on Wednesday.

School is out today and tomorrow for the Education Minnesota Professional Conference (formerly known as MEA, except everybody still seems to call it that) and Neubauer hopes the break in the action will help contain the spread of flu-like illness even further.

My child came home from

My child came home from school saying that they learned to cough and sneeze into their elbow with Germy Wormie, and I was totally taken aback. I always covered with my hands. But I went to the website and now I get it, hands touch, elbows don't!! Kids can touch 300 surfaces in 1/2 hour and they hate to wash their hands. This is a simple thing that can make a huge difference. There is also an entertaining DVD that teaches them in a fun way the elbow cough, as well as other important hygiene habits.

Here's an update. District

Here's an update. District Health Services Coordinator Monica Neubauer told me flu-related absences yesterday (Oct. 12) were as follows:

Hutchinson High School — 95
Hutchinson Middle School — 103
Park Elementary School — 75
West Elementary School — 59

Compared to those numbers from Friday, the high school was about the same, middle school absentees were down about 20, Park Elementary absentees were up 32, and West absentees were up by eight.

So far, Neubauer hasn't heard of any severe cases requiring hospitalization.

Perhaps Lisa should also

Perhaps Lisa should also grow some thick skin. You took a general and legitimate comment from Ash and blew it out of proportion. Unfortunately some parents are not as diligent as you in caring for sick kids. My wife and I think we are doing the right things with our kids and I wasn't offended by Ash's comments. I agree with Ash. I sat in front of a person at church yesterday who was constantly sniffling and coughing. I see it in stores as well. These are the people Ash was targeting in her comment, I believe.

First of all, I just wanted

First of all, I just wanted to say that I never mean't this to be an argument of any kind. I'm a stay at home mom to an almost 2 year old little girl. I'm not really exposed to the virus because she doesn't go to daycare or we don't have school-age children around our house. But what I wanted to say was how I saw so many people at the grocery store this weekend who had sick kids, coughing and then touching everything. That was my point I was trying to get across, was to the people who I see out in the public that are obviously sick and still going out and infecting others by coughing or sneezing on the things that we may touch. That's what bothers me the most. I'm not saying that EVERYONE is like this, just a few that I've seen already. Lisa-you did the right thing by having your kids stay home, that's wonderful. I'm sorry if my post offended you.

oh my did I say something to upset someone??....You know what Tms,so what if my spelling is bad who cares the point of the issue if the implication that us parents are letting our children run around after being home sick is just wrong. My kids are both strait A students. But even my kids know that if you are home sick it is because you are sick. My kids do not say to me hey mom I want to run to wally world, no they are home sick and they are in their rooms sleeping off this illness. What's wrong is ash your wife or girlfriend and you do not like my setting her strait on a few things?Grow a thick skin then or grow up!

Are you so perfect TMS, you have never just typed a letter with out making a few mistakes.....

I just hope everyone is doing the right thing, and taking the necessary precautions to help slow the spread of the FLU. I have been around town and I have seen plenty of sick people still out doing normal everyday things, as they cough and sneeze and touch everything on the shelf. There are a lot of people who have no thought of anyone else around them.

FYI....I don't care if I spelled anything right.

I am sure that if the child is at home sick that the parents are not allowing them to run off to wal mart or any store to help spread this. My children were both home sick and are fully better and back in school. Please do not insinute we parents are that stupid or careless. us parents do our best to make sure our kids do not attend school sick. It be like us saying to those who are sick, well I hope you are stying homer and not spreading this around your office. if your sick you are going to stay home.

That's terrible! I would hope that all of these kids that are out sick are staying home and not traveling out to the local stores or infecting others. I hope that parents are taking it seriously and watching their children closely for serious symptoms that can develop. Maybe the school district should consider closing the school if there are too many kids getting sick. Who cares about money. We should put our children first.

I shot some video of the homecoming royalty during Friday's halftime show (in a 55-0 wallop). I got it on our new sports site this afternoon.

Just go to: www.myprepsplus.mn and then go to the Hutchinson page. It's there now. There's also some video from the game.
