The Hutchinson 16s defeated

The Hutchinson 16s defeated Springfield today, 11-5, to advance to the sub-district championship tomorrow at 8 a.m. in Glencoe.

Post 906 will play either Springfield or Sleepy Eye. A second game if needed is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

Having looked at the district schedule for next week (Hutch already has clinched a spot), the sub-district champion plays in the early afternoon Thursday - the runner-up plays at 8 a.m.

Note: 8 a.m. is early. Hopefully we win.

The VFW 15s lost to Chaska, 3-1 today, eliminating them from their sub-district playoffs.

Oops...I forgot to include one word that makes a huge difference - "class." He was ranked No. 7 among sophomore defenseman in Class A.

I think that the story of battling back is a great topic. When any athlete gets injured it is a challenge to return to form. But to claim this young unproven hockey player as the 7th ranked anything is something only Sid would proclaim. As far as scoring, the main responsibility of a defensive player is to prevent scoring, however if he in fact was ranked 7th in the state he should have the skating and stick handling ability to bring it up for at least a handful of scores. As far as having "one" of the best plus minus scores on the team... shouldn't he have the best if he is ranked 7th in the state... or is the team stacked with other top ten players in the state on the team. I hardly think that as a freshman he had the numbers to represent such a silly claim as 7th best in the state. You said it yourself...it was his first year on varsity... his numbers were very similar to other 10th graders who skated on varsity teams throughout the state. I don't recall the Buzz around the rink was watching this phenom... but rather watching a rather average club doing the best that they could with the talent that they had.

I think thatssoraven should withhold his comments if he/she doesn't know much about hockey. There are very few scoring defensemen and the job of a defenseman is mostly to prevent the other team from scoring. If your defenseman is taking over a game by scoring a bunch of goals, then he is most likely out of position and the other team is also going to score.

Clearly, you're not a hockey fan or you would know that there is a lot more to the game than scoring. Not all defenseman are scorers, plus Connor was in hs first season on varsity.

He still had one of the best plus/minus ratings on the team, and in the end was probably the most solid defenseman because he used his frame well around the net.

The point of this story isn't about how many goals he scored, but rather his journey back from a terrible injury that could have ended worse. I suggest picking up a print copy today - it really is a good story for all to read.

One goal for the whole season??? A player ranked 7th in the state at his position should be able to take over a game... not manage just 1 goal. Come on Eric, get off your "homer" kick and just report the news without looking at the last name of who you are covering. Getting injured and coming back was a challenge i bet... i hope he remains healthy.

When I was around 12 years old my parents thought I would never learn to swim. We had recently moved to Hutchinson (some 40 years ago). I had been to group swim classes and failed to learn. My parents had even hired a private instructor. I still failed to learn. In fact the instructor told my mom that "some people are just natural rocks, and never learn to swim."

Jerry Carlson spent some one-on-one time in the pool with me that summer. To my amazement and to the amazement of my parents, I learned to swim. Jerry (Mr. Carlson) made me comfortable in an element that I had feared.

I have had years of fun in the water since then and recently competed in my first triathlon which required completing a half mile open swim in a river with wind, chop, and current. I would never have been there if it weren't for Jerry Carlson. I had a great day.

I am so grateful for what he taught me.

Renner is now in fourth with 10 walleyes weighing 27 pounds, 3 ounces. The leader is at 31-3. The four-day tournament concludes Saturday.

Alissa was a double

Alissa was a double qualifier - placing second in the one-mile event Friday. She trailed heading down the backstretch, but passed a girl to place second.

Senior Gina Collings also qualfied in the 300 hurdles, running a personal-best time to finish second.

Aura do you understand what you read? Do you have any grasp about sports and seedings? I was very clear... Hutch beat two teams ranked lower than them... I think if the rankings were anywhere close to being accurate they were expected to win those games. They eventually lost to a 4th ranked team... once again, a team in the loser's bracket that did what the rankings predicted. Hutch finished with another losing record like they have generally done for the past decade. How you view this as "crow" is both funny and confusing. Are you thinking that finishing with an 11-13 record is a success? Compared to many seasons it is I guess.

Aura...before we get too excited lets just study what has happened. Hutchinson ranked 10th just beat Waconia ranked 12th and New Prague ranked 11th.
With these two wins it brings Hutchinson's record to 11 wins and 12 losses... still a losing record... better than many of the previous years (which is the point I have been making), but not worthy of a parade yet. A win vs Eden Prairie ranked 4th would mean something that resembles respectful. And I agree, Eric probably is nice. I am just reporting facts and not getting lost in my youthful glee. Eric gets paid to sugar coat and be a homer... nothing wrong with that I guess.
