The two movies Kay and I

The two movies Kay and I chatted about in the most recent edition of "Six Minutes Over Hutchinson" reigned at the box office this weekend.

"Kung Fu Panda" took the top spot with $60 million and "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" took $40 million.

I saw "Kung Fu Panda" Saturday and it's probably my favorite movie of the summer so far. It was very well written, had some great fight scenes and lots of laughs. Of course, they leave a coupe loose ends untied. I smell sequel bait. I you haven't seen it yet, be sure to stick around through the end credits.

Did any of you see "You Don't Mess with the Zohan?" That looked funny, too. How was it?

Not that you care, but I won't see either movie. Prom Night appears to be another movie about some lunatic chasing around some girl that screams just as much as the girl that would be sitting behind me kicking my seat at the theater. I would rather see a movie like this where they do all the killing and get through the so called plot in the first 10 minutes, and then show previews for an hour and a half.

I thought the previews to Street Kings looked good, but I have a really hard time watching Keanu. He is almost as bad of an actor as Nick Cage. I like to watch movies and be able to forget the actor and focus on the character. When I see Keanu act, I just see some dude regurgitating lines.

“Prom Night” ruled the box office this weekend, bringing in $22.7 million in nationwide box office. The other new movie Kay and I blabbed about, “Street Kings,” came in at slightly more than half of that — $12 million. Did any of you out in Leaderland see either or both? What did you think? Which of the two makes a better date movie?

I agree. I enjoyed it a lot, too. The Hutchinson Theatre Company always does a great job. This one was a whodunnit and it held my interest from beginning to end. Here's what happens at the end — just kidding. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for something to do this weekend.

(Doug Hanneman is editor of the Hutchinson Leader and is married to a Hutchinson Theatre Company volunteer [full disclosure]. He may be reached at hanneman@hutchinsonleader.com)

I went and it was great! I can't say much as I don't want to give anything away, but it was well worth it! Great job cast and director!
If you have the chance, you must see it!

Did anyone go to see “The Mousetrap” last weekend? When we chatted with director Mary Haugen for last week's podcast (click here to listen if you missed it :-) ), she promised there'd be a few startling jolts.

I've never been to a theater performance that made me jump, and I was wondering how that works. Back in 1959, the horror movie “The Tingler” featured vibrating buzzers in the seats to startle audience members. Now, there's an idea.

I saw Collective Unconscious perform "Bridge Over Troubled Water" up in St. Cloud a couple weeks ago. That show was awesome! What a group of talented musicians!

My wife and I went. It was one of the best things we've attended in this area, ever! Hearing the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds performed by a talented 24-member ensemble, that included strings, brass and an assortment of instruments not often seen and heard, was a treat. It gave us an even greater appreciation of the genius of Brian Wilson. You could tell the musicians on stage were amazed by what they were performing, too.

Collective Unconscious apparently also has done Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and the Beatles "Abbey Road." They hinted they enjoyed D-C's auditorium so much that they'd like to do BOTW there. Maybe the D-C organizers can arrange that.

The only disappointment was that the place was only about half filled. The side wings had almost no one in them. Not sure the marketing effort got out to enough people about just how great a show this was. If you missed it, keep your eyes open for it performing somewhere in the future and don't miss it next time.

Critics are diggin' “Horton Hears a Who,” which has an 82-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, none of the reviews I've seen comment on the movie's obvious advantage over its creepy predecessors. I guess they haven't listened to Episode 7 of “Six Minutes over Hutchinson.” How else could they be missing the elephant in the room?

Have you seen “Horton?” If so, tell us how you liked it!

You make a strong case, Wigg, but it's worth noting two things. Our worm eater was not interested in winning the book and our eel eater gets extra points for that nasty description of what the eel was like. Just curious, have you ever tried either? :-)
