I saw it last night. I wasn't impressed with that show. It seemed that most of the situations could have been avoided and almost seemed that the people on the show had made mistakes. I watch 'Cops' a lot, and I have yet to see an episode where they tell someone they are under arrest while they are inside the vehicle. There was another incident where an officer was at his desk which was in the corner of the room. He turned away from the supect and got punched. The show has lots of examples of what not to do. I'm not an expert on law enforcement so go ahead and rip me apart for feeling this way.

Justme, I did send an e-mail

Justme, I did send an e-mail to a TruTV spokesperson a couple weeks ago. I bugged 'em again Saturday and got a reply this morning. The spokesperson apologized for the late reply and wrote "Deputy Mueller’s episode aired last night, 7/13, instead. There was a last minute schedule change that we weren’t aware of, and we’re just getting everything sorted out now. I will find out if it’s re-airing anytime soon, and let you know."

So, there you go. If the episode runs again, and I find out about it in advance ;-), I'll put the word out.

Correct, Garagemonkey. I

Correct, Garagemonkey. I believe Historic Hutchinson is probably only 5-6 years old. The buildings spoken of were torn down long before I came here in 1985.

Of course, was it a case similar to our schools? Did the city (bathhouse) or Masons, or other groups in charge of other lost buildings invest in their maintenance over the years so that the structures didn't reach a point of no return? Or did they reach a point where the land they sat on were more valuable for another use?

It seems Hutchinson, similar to many cities (recall the big demolition period Minneapolis went through about 1960) succumbed to our addiction to the horseless carriage and the need to park them somewhere. Seems many of Hutchinson's lost building became parking lots without a lot of complaints at the time so that everyone could park 10 feet from a store door. (Now many of us are overweight from eating too much and not getting enough exercise. Perhaps we would have been better off parking farther away or just walking from home to work.)

If also appears that a couple dozen of some of the city's earliest homes were removed over the years for projects such as Evergreen Apartments and other developments on the fringe of downtown.

There was a push a few years ago to remove all the houses on Jefferson Street between Washington and First Avenue South to make way for a new post office. The Postal Service didn't have the money, so the project died. It has been nice to see that most of the owners of those homes have since invested into upgrades that have that block looking pretty good.

It's nice that the preservation group is working on projects like the Merril house, and other homes in town like the Hurt home and others that will eventually need preservation, but what happened to the Masonic Lodge and the Crow river Bath House is a crying shame! Where was the preservation society when the wrecking ball came to those historical buildings?

As one of the Millpond

As one of the Millpond Lifeguards in the early 1970's Ivan Hurt Hutch Recreation Era, I can remember what the pond was like on a long hot summer day! Keeping order was a constant job with kids hiding under the diving tower and all the sometimes dangerous horseplay you had to stop! I remember Chief Brad Emans and friends would visit the pond back then on thoes hot summer days. Loosing the old bath house was a shame! That building could have served as a small historical center for the crow river or something similar. Then there was the time I caught two kids peeing on the bath house floor! I made them wipe it up with their towels and banned them for the rest of the summer. What a long hot summer for them that year. I remember my dad and I would take our boat down the river and tie it up by the north end of the dam spillway and have open-face hot roast beef sandwiches at the Hoyle filling station lunch counter! It is sad to see the park without the bath house and the diving tower and the new dam is far from traditional, however the memories are still vivid and there are many old pictures from the Leader I have saved to help remember it by and what life was like growing up on the mighty Crow river.

Glad to see that that 10 bands are involved. In past years, there has benn as few and 3 or 4 and that pretty much made the parade worthless in my eyes.
The bands mixed in with the other units make a really great parade!

You can't always trust the movie critics.

Before I went to see "Fool's Gold" Sunday night, I read some early reviews. Reviewers were almost unanimously sharpening their claws on this one. Rotten Tomatoes gave it an aggregate score of only 10%!

After talking up "Fool's Gold" in this week's Six Minutes Over Hutchinson, I was fully prepared to eat a healthy helping of crow.

Guess what? "Fool's Gold" wasn't that bad. It's not as great as "Hitch," Andy Tennant's previous film, but it's not the worst movie ever, either. It's cheesy, fun, good-spirited entertainment.

The writing could've been a little more solid, but the cast was charming and there were some good gags. The film is set in Florida and the Caribbean, but was mostly shot in Australia. The tropical backdrop was a welcome respite from this weekend's snow and brutal windchill.

If you're looking for a light-hearted date movie this Valentine's Day, "Fool's Gold" is a safe bet.

My favorite sports moment was when my son Alex, who was four years old at the time, won first place in his age division of the first pedal tractor pull event that he had ever entered at the county fair in Sioux Falls. Close seconds are all the times I got to see Lindsay Whalen play basketball. What a talent!
