Cha,
Your thought process and writing skills are very similar to the above mentioned age bracket. And for all of you folks out there who have toddlers... no offense at all. :)

I am sick and tired of government getting what ever they want while the rest of us sit here and have to cut back and have more tax hikes. It is time to stand up and say enough is enough. And this is only the beginning. If you don't like it don't read it. This is my free speech rights..So you just sit back and be a pansy...

Everytime the City Council comes up with something else they "WANT" to buy I am going to bring it up. It is like a 2 year old. I just want one more little piece. There will be more I will only bet....

One more comment. I would

One more comment. I would like to see the city council look at a campaign to fill the empty spaces in and around Hutchinson. There are so many buildings, all over town that are empty, why not encourage new businesses to look more at what is here and how they could utilize those spaces for a new business. Also, I would like to see owners that allow new businesses to get on their feet and be successful before raising rents. I look at downtown Hutchinson and many improvements have been made to some buildings, others are in need of help. If a successful business came to one of those in need of help buildings I would only hope it would help the owner to make improvements. Again, a downtown that looks inviting is a downtown that is visited and explored and a vital part of the community.

Terry, I am with you. 101

Terry, I am with you. 101 Park Place has not been successful but for two restaurants...and they both left. The building just needs a complete over haul... new look. Mr Sosa, you are correct also, except you are missing the most important element of your memories... your mother in law! That is a very hard combination to reconstruct in a large scale restaurant. I have lived in Hutchinson most of my life give or take a few years. That corner has not been successful since the old days of the S & L department store! It is in my opinion an ugly building! Doesn't invite people in. Look at Zella's, large clean windows, clean exterior, even the dry plant planters in front are well maintained... all in all it says come in and try me. Looking at 101 Park place, it says, where's my door and is there anything in there I want or need! It is one of those places in town where I wish I would win the lottery, take it over and create something of beauty. The Park in the middle of town is such a treasure, it deserves to be viewed from different angles and locations.

The best basement drinking

The best basement drinking establishment I have ever experienced was my mother-in-law's house, when she lived in northeast Minneapolis.

She and her SO had a little mini-bar down there, all kinds of random souvenirs and sports stuff everywhere, and a big wall mural painting of dogs playing pool.

She has since moved out of that house, but any place that can recapture that kitschy but friendly atmosphere would score huge points with me.

Hey, BornHere, I think we

Hey, BornHere, I think we have talked at some point about this, because I've been telling people for years this exact same idea. My co-workers at the Leader will verify that.

In my 25 years in Hutchinson I've seen at least a half-dozen incarnations of restaurants stuck down in the dungeon of that building. None seemed to last more that a few years, and the place seems to sit empty as much as it is used.

I took a year of restaurant management training in high school. One thing has stuck was that when it comes to selecting a site for a successful restaurant, avoid places that have had a long run of failed operations because you have to overcome all those bad vibes. You'll constantly be trying to overcome past bad impressions people had.

A basement restaurant probably would work in a more urban, downtown setting. I don't think it works well here. Putting the restaurant on the second floor and opening up that north wall so people can overlook the park would make it a very unique view. You'd have a Zella's-like view, only better because the view wouldn't be blocked by Main Street traffic.

I'd fill in the section of the first floor that was removed and move the second floor offices there. There might even be certain professional offices that wouldn't mind basement level space without windows.

(Terry Davis is a Hutchinson Leader staff writer. E-mail him at davis@hutchinsonleader.com.)

Just a thought: Wouldn't it

Just a thought: Wouldn't it be nice if someone had the money to redo 101 Park Place? Redo the whole second floor into a restaurant with large windows over looking the park, the main level could remain stores, adding stores over the basement area that is now open. Those businesses could again have large windows over looking the park. The basement would be business storage. Maybe then whatever went in that bldg would have a better chance at success.

Good call, Chris. This is an excellent book. Gabriel Garcia Marquez is one of my favorite authors. I also would suggest his volume "Collected Stories" to anyone who enjoyed "Love in the time of the Cholera." The last third of "Collected Stories" is especially great. These are weird and often heartbreaking short stories.

I tweeked a recipe the other

I tweeked a recipe the other day that I can't wait to make with fresh produce this summer, but in February we make due, right?

Anyway, I peeled potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, onions and tossed with a little butter. I seasoned with salt, pepper, dill, garlic powder and onion powder. I chopped a couple chicken breasts in to chunks and roasted it in the oven for about 1/2 hour. Then added some ring sausage cut into chunks and corn on the cob and roast until the last items were hot. It was so good, with tremendous flavor. I can't wait to see how much flavor fresh veggies have on the dish. By the way, I used the casolete (sp?) dish from the Clay Coyote, which was perfect for this dish!! Have a good weekend.
