I used to commute to Winsted

I used to commute to Winsted many years ago. I went north of Silver Lake on Co. 2 toward Cokato (about 4 miles). to catch 5. Same road as Terry explains, with a few less turns, if the road is still open to there. Could also take Hwy 7 to Co. 16 in Silver Lake, which will be open, then head north to 5.

Detours on your commuter route are always uncomfortable.

Actually, you shouldn't go

Actually, you shouldn't go towards Glencoe at all.
Looking at a county map, and assuming you want to avoid gravel roads, one way to Winsted from Hutchinson would be to go east on State Highway 7 four miles to County Road 4. Turn left and go north about 4 miles to CR 5, turn right (east) and go 2.5 miles to CR 16. Turn left (north) and go 1 mile to CR 5 again. Turn right (east) and CR 5 will take you into the south end of Winsted near the airport (about 9 miles). This all assumes the county doesn't have any work scheduled on that route. It is about 21 miles — not much farther than the normal Hwy. 7 to CR 1 route, but with more turns, obviously. You might want to check it out before the detour goes in place.

Good luck.

Highway 7 to close for construction in April

Beginning April 14, all of State Highway 7 from Silver Lake to St. Bonifacius will be closed for a $13.3 million reconstruction project.

Don’t panic.

The detour between the Hutchinson area and the Twin Cities will only be nine miles longer than the current direct route, according to state Department of Transportation regional engineer Dave Johnston. That’s a fact that even surprised him.

The entire project should be done by Nov. 15, although portions of Highway 7 nearer the metro will open earlier as construction there is finished.
