Hutchinson's "finest building" was named Ansgar College. It was named after the historical figure Ansgar who is credited with bringing Christianity to Denmark and Sweden in the early 800s A.D. The college's name later became Metropolitan College, Hutchinson College and then Maplewood Academy.

The largest and most identifiable building lost in Hutchinson’s history is the college. At the top of “college hill,” and nearly five stories, the structure gave Hutchinson a skyline for nearly 80 years.
