Arcy, your are correct but please remember there are exceptions to every rule/guideline. In this case, a person with deep pockets is willing to toss some money at an artist to buy a picture. Deep Pockets knows the person who owns the corner building and received the okay for the picture. Deep Pockets is also a former member of the Table of Power and thus gets the pity vote for the guady/distracting art. Is it right? That's just the way it is. We need to get used to the idea. Look at it this way, it will look better than Tumble Weed Park (formerly known as Girl Scout Park) across the street. Who came up with the lame idea to put 1001 bushes in that park rather than create a green area with a couple of picnic tables?

Does the Mural follow the

Does the Mural follow the guidelines? It isn't posted on line but in Tuesday's paper there was an article about signs, the laws and regulations concerning advertising signs. My question from the beginning is how does this proposed "mural" (advertisement for the town) fit into those regulations? I seem to remember a year or more ago one business was told their proposed sign was too big, thus gaudy and distracting. It couldn't have been bigger than this proposed monstrosity.

I have discussed the idea with Norman... he is proud of you, your idea and especially Beans the Clown. He always liked small-town America and the mural idea is certainly small-town thinking at its best. Just one question: Would those be Beans' autographed big shoes or just a worn-out pair of big red flip-flops?

Ghost,
Being that scenes of the river and wildlife zoo will be apart of this tapestry... wouldn't it be wild to actually have the pawn shop in this masterpiece?. It could have Bean's peering into the pawn's window looking to trade a pair of his big shoes for an autographed picture of Lindsey Whalen. Heck why not have a scene that shows a vehicle heading south on highway 15 crossing over the bridge with it's driver smiling and pointing towards the Gateway... very Rockwell like don't you think?

I think we should say that the mural is already completed and it is a close-up of one of the redish colored rocks in the dam. That way everyone would be happy and we could all get out of this unscathed.

Correct as usual, Wendy. A picture of the Library Square, the river, the Crow River Fountain of Youth, the sanctuary or other current landmarks seems silly -- at best. I am not familiar with the Sons of Silence. Is that another name for the city council? I heard that's the name they were tagged with when they silently voted "yes" to the mural idea and pacified a former council member. Or is it the name given to the school board when asked to explain how they could justify the silly -- at best -- raise for the head cheese and other administrators?

I think that we should include some things that have really shaped our community. We really need to have a dispenser of Scotch Tape included because 3M's arrival here really influenced the growth of the community. On the other end of the spectrum would be a picture of a well known leader of HTI holding a suspension system.

Mike Hogan is to be in the center, and the scenery will be Library square, the river, and the sanctuary. (which makes no sense, because you can see them in person by walking 2 blocks either direction of the mural )Personally, I think The Sons of Silence would be a colorful addition. Paint them riding down Main St. Ah memories!

Mural magic continues on the

Mural magic continues on the web -- a big thank you to everyone who is making the concept and content as clear as crystal. Fortunately, it will include plenty of famous people and there won't be any need for the mayor's legend. Lindsey will be depicted in one of her two careers. Beans the Clown will have a prominent place, potentially between Viola and biking pioneer Sophus Christensen. Duck-art leader Les Kouba will be shown sharing mallard ideas with Rich Schiebel. Water Carnival royalty will be included -- how about 1988 princess Bridget Peterson, an all-in-the-family theme brought to us by money-lady Kay. We're not sure how Little Crow will be depicted... murdering a family near present-day Jefferson Street or getting gunned down by Nathan Lamson north of Hutchinson. A tribute to "Dogs Playing Poker" sounds like a must, hopefully with Jake the Shepp looking over the shoulder of one of the table players. Sounds like the Hutchinson Brothers are being left out -- word is they're looking for people who stayed here for more than a couple of days and contributed more than just a name. Am I missing someone or does that round out the Mural of Fame contingency?

I agree... what happens if Jake the Dog decides to crap on someone's lawn and refuses to pick it up? What happens if Jake has relations with any untitled mutt that breezes thru town? Then what... what if he bites the mailman... then what?

Related to the comments by Lurker, does anyone know how long we will be subjected to viewing this mural? 5 years? 10 years? 30 years? It seems like the "couple conditions" the mayor refers to are quite vague and subject to interpretation. Who determines if the "use stays the same" or if "the appearance isn't suitably maintained?" Are the details of the will concerning the mural and the council conditions published anywhere for the public to see? Was the city attorney's advice solicited prior to the council's decision?
