Back to page topMain Street is the only known address for the O.D. Hutchinson, Druggist building. We are asking readers if they know any more about its location. There is a tall church steeple or chimney from the Ames Mill behind it. If any readers respond with a location, we'll post it here.

Back to page topI think I might have found it. Here is a postcard taken after 1900 and before 1910 from what would now be Drop and Go Shipping looking south:

The Quast building wasn't built until 1890 and the large brick building connected to the left of it was built after that so the top pic of O.D. Hutchinson could have been taken when the street was more open before those buildings were built.
Here's a close up from the post card:

This building does appear to have the same balcony, posts, and same shape. The lean to on the left must have been removed though.

Back to page topFound? That looks right to me. Thanks tobybryan. I found an old article in the Leader describing a bowling alley O.D. Hutchinson built next to his drug store at the time the first railroad arrived in 1886. Since O.D. sold out in 1890 and his successor built a new Model Drug store next to it, the old building could have survived with a different owner or tennant until the post card image was taken at the turn of the century.

"O.D Hutchinson cordially...
Back to page top"O.D Hutchinson cordially invites you all, the rich and the poor, to inspect his line of Holiday Goods." Mr. Hutchinson was quite a writer.
Thanks tobybryan for another great artifact find.
I think there may be more material like this out there from O.D. Hutchinson. A December edition of the Leader from the late 1880s had a full-color poster and calendar from Mr. Hutchinson. It was saved when the edition was bound into book of all editions from that year. The color quality is quite good. He was a promoter of his store. With several druggists in town at the time, the competition might have been stiff.
