Constructed: May 3 to Sept. 13, 1940

Location: At the north entrance of the old fairgrounds near 3M

Architecture: Art moderne or deco style described in a Leader article as “... of the modernistic type and pleasing to the eye.”

Torn down: Still standing

The fair moved from its old location next to 3M to its present location in 1993. The administration building was sold to 3M, and is still standing and visible from a cul-de-sac at the south end of Huron Street S.E.

The McLeod County Fair Administration Building above is part of a 20-week series of Lost Hutchinson buildings. Watch the Tuesday print edition for more information about the McLeod County Fair Administration Building. If any readers have other photos, renderings or information about this building, please post them here or send them to: Hutchinson Leader, 36 Washington Ave. W., Hutchinson, MN 55350.

A collection of information published in the Lost Hutchinson series as well as reader submitted photos and remembrances will be published in a magazine later this year.

Perhaps it is fitting to end a 21-week Lost Hutchinson series with a building that wasn't lost to a wrecking ball or fire.

It survives today at the "old" fairgrounds, now owned by 3M. The Leader reported in 1940, "(the) Administration Building will be the finest of kind in Northwest."

It was struck by a tornado in 1983, but rebuilt the same year in time for the fair.

All of the photos and information from the series as well as unpublished building features will be included in a magazine available this fall.
