Lost Hutchinson: Ansgar College

At the top of “college hill,” and nearly five stories, the structure gave Hutchinson a skyline for nearly 80 years.

Constructed: July 1, 1902 to Oct. 28, 1902

Destroyed by fire: Feb. 11, 1903

Reconstructed: 1903

Location: On top of the hill on the west side of Main Street

Architecture: Late Gothic Revival popular from 1895 to 1940

Torn down: Feb. 15, 1980

Hutchinson's "finest building" was named Ansgar College. It was named after the historical figure Ansgar who is credited with bringing Christianity to Denmark and Sweden in the early 800s A.D. The college's name later became Metropolitan College, Hutchinson College and then Maplewood Academy.
