Children experience stress, too

As parents and caretakers, adults often view the world of children and adolescents as happy and carefree. But children, and even very young children, worry and feel stress to some degree.

What is stress? Stress is the result of demands and the ability to meet those demands. Children can feel overwhelmed at time. Toddlers may feel overwhelmed when separated from parents. School-aged children may feel overwhelmed while preparing for exams. A nervous stomach, sweaty palms and tense shoulders may be symptoms adults remember when they think of feelings they once experienced while taking exams.

As children get older, academic and social pressures create stress. Parents can also cause stress in children’s lives. High-achieving parents may expect the same level of achievement from their children. Those children who lack their parents’ motivation or capabilities may feel frustrated and become stressed.

Some of the causes of stress in children and adolescents: Changes in lifestyles and disruptions in the normal routine of people in all age groups can bring about stress. For children and adolescents some of these causes include:
• Changing schools
• Problem with peers
• Injuries or severe illness
• Recent move to a new home
• Loss of anything valuable to the child
• Parents’ divorce, separation or marital conflict
• Inadequate physical resources-food, clothing, shelter, etc.
• Recent death of a loved one-parent, grandparent, sibling, friend
• Constant fatigue brought about by inadequate rest, sleep or recreation
• Regular conflict between your child and another family member, close friend or school teacher

Signs of stress in children and adolescents: A certain amount of stress is normal and not always bad. Unfortunately, children are becoming stressed at younger and younger ages today.

Good article for parents to read, too often children are punished for bad behavior that may be stress induced. Adults do not always deal with stress in healthy ways and neither do children.

yes sometimes parents do not catch stress but not all bad behavior is the result of stress. If that was the case all the time then those kids in lock up would be able to say gee your honor the reason I broke in and stole that itemn or robbed a person or hurt a person was because I was soooooooo stressed over my parents's moving us to a new location.... or my dog died and it affected me for years.... I knew when we moved it would cause stress. My husband and I did everything to destress the kids as much as we could.

now about religiouse counseling.... not every child is in church. there are athiests, wiccans and other non church. My daughter is wiccan. she dealt with the move by channeling her stress a whole different way. My son was thrilled with the move.

thousands of kids lose parents and how they deal with it is with how their family helps them cope.

there are families who lose their homes to foreclosures, moving is going to happen.

not everything that goes wrong with a child can be placed all on stress. If that is the case then my children's doctores are all wrong on their diagnosises.... son has adhd, autism, and ocd. daughter has add, o.d.d. and ocd plus depression. I guess I should just call up their doctores and say hey your all wrong this is alll from stress of everyday living.

justlisahere, you always offer some thought-provoking verbage. When I read your daughter was a wiccan, I was unsure what that meant. The encyclopedia says it's a neopagen, nature-based group. It notes that in the 1950s, it was originally called witch cult or witchcraft but now it includes a little magic and a horned god. I'm surprised I didn't know that. Then again, I'm thinking all your destressing before the move worked wonders.

Thought-provoking? I've read some of JustLisa's stuff. I don't get it. Like JustLisa, our family is new to this town and I'm new to this site but I'm not feeling her stress. And, I don't think my son has joined the local witch cult yet (I'll double-check with him tonight). If he is hanging out with the witch club, I'll be spending more time with him and less on this site. Who knows,JustLisa, that might work for you, too.

I put a call in to the spelling/punctuation police and am waiting for a reply. Is doctores spelled with an "e" or is it "doctors"? I grew up in Silver Lake and we always spelled it "doctors". Then again, based on Just's comments, perhaps the specialists her family have been seeing are "doctores". Just looking for a clarification. Where is Slingblade when we need him?

Unca-T, maybe it is docktirs? I too have been awaiting the wise words of Slingblade and Ghostofbirdflu. I'm fairly sure GOBF could help us out with the recently popular witch club as well. Do we need to beckon our wise gurus? If so, how would we do this? Smoke signals? Super high frequency sound pulses?

If we don't hear from them soon, our community and our English language as we know it today may cease to exist. HELP!!!!

Fisc,

I've been waiting to hear from Slingblade and Ghostofbirdlu, too. Several weeks ago we discovered that both Sling and GOBF provided false identities when they registered at this Web site, which is a violation of the User Agreement. So we sent them an e-mail asking them to provide accurate, verifiable information in their registration form. After a couple of days, they hadn't done this (maybe they also provided false e-mail addresses and our message never reached them?), so we were forced to terminate their posting privileges

Slingblade and Ghostofbirdflu: If you are out there, we will welcome you back. But first you must complete your registration form fully and accurately, as have all others who post here. All information contained in those registration forms is confidential.

If you want to play the game, you have to play by the rules.

Nooooooooooooo....say it...

Nooooooooooooo....say it isn't so! I feel like I just watched the Nixon resignation re-runs. I feel so cheap and cheated. Were they Communists infiltrating our democratic newspaper forum? Or, were they spies from the (red) Star Tribune? Hmmmm.... anyway, I have completely forgiven them for their sneakiness.

Sling and GOBF...PLEASE come back. The quality of the reading on the forum has suffered greatly since you were "busted". We need your leadership and guidance on how to appropriately apply sarcasm to the various topics. PLEASE PLEASE.... come back!!!! We miss ya! Hope to hear from you soon.

Uncle Ted... you might need to beckon the underground railroad so we can find our missing colleagues. Dust off the night vision goggles and let us know what you find. Solidarity in the sarcasm world is a must and we have lost a few of our key troopers. If anyone knows of their whereabouts, please help us!

No no no...don't even think about telling us that you can't take a pill to solve EVERYTHING. The research began in the 60's and it (the ROI) is now full-blown... life's challenges can all be met with a simple pill solution. That's what it says in the commercials on TV so it MUST be true! Here are some new pills that are about to be released. I'm looking forward to the commercials:

* The Parentopill: Take this and your parental worries will go away. Or, at least you won't know they (the problems) are happening. One pill a day and your kid(s) will turn out perfect.

* The Nomoneyworry pill: Forget the hassles of financial responsibility and take one of these each day. Your money worries will be gone forever and you can lead a wonderful life forever.

* The Makemehealthy pill: Don't worry about what you eat, smoke, inhale, etc. Take one of these per day and your body will be as healthy as a horse. If you take two per day, you can live to be 100+.

And, coming in the very near future...

The Multieverythingforeveryone pill: This will do away with all the pills above AND it will take care of everything that we need to do every day. Wake up, take one of these and never worry about anything ever again.

See, our world is getting better! :)

Will the snuggie keep the witches away? If so, count me in. I will post my credit card later for you. I'd like a lifetime supply!

And to think that our ancestors had to burn the witches. If we had to get this done today, we'd have to get a burning permit, file a global warming impact study, arrange to have the local emergency crews on-call, and probably get a variance to install a good old-fashioned stake. We'd need to make sure the firewood didn't come from outside of the city. The fun goes on... Plus OSHA would probably need to be on site to see if the burning met all the local safety standards. Of course, we'd have to sell lottery tickets to determine which lawyers get to partake in the aftermath. Ooops, another permit required for the lottery tickets. And finally, we'd probably need to clear this with Al Gore as he would need to make sure that the event is truly "green".

I like the idea of a snuggie and a pill much better! I think we might have a market for this? I'm not sure we want to have witches in Hutch. It might not bode well for the millions of people that are going to be coming to town on the new paved trail. I think we need to be able to post a nice and friendly sign...
